Unfortunately there are too many sets to keep track of. So this is my quest as a broke college student to finally pull a relic and maybe complete a set.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.comBlogger64125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-26285042575701457282013-01-14T05:51:00.001-08:002013-01-14T05:51:13.304-08:00Trade with Dhoff pt. 1The next card I will highlight is one that spent a long time on my want list. Well not this kid exactly, but the base will work just as well. I didn't want to spend the extra 15 bucks for the refractor off of COMC. Actually I didn't have to spend anything on it. A long while ago I completed a trade with the other Dustin over at cootveal. He happened to highlight some cards he picked up at show and I quickly pounced on several of them. I would highlight the others but I'm limited to what I have around the office until I remember to do some scanning at home.
Ellsbury has been one of my favorites and is only one of three active Native American players in the Bigs. The other two being Kyle Lohse and Joba Chamberlain. Although plagued by injuries a healthy Ellsbury is quite the threat. He finished second in MVP voting ultimately losing out to JV in 2011. I wish Topps would bring back this set, but instead we're stuck with online code gimmicks and so many inserts that it's damn near impossible to complete a set.

Thanks Dustin for the great trade. I'll highlight the other cards soon!A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-12904853172602631692013-01-11T07:59:00.001-08:002013-01-11T07:59:11.051-08:00Greetings from a long lost bloggerI think it's been at least 6 months since I last got on, and even longer since I posted anything. Starting today that will hopefully change. I have plenty of new cards to profile. Seriously I have a stack larger than Allen Iverson's ego sitting on my desk. There have been Some crazy life changes since I last updated this thing as well. Mainly, I started my first big boy job at the wonderful University of Michigan, I got engaged to the most wonderful woman I know, and I witnessed the Tigers blow the World Series in game 4 to the surprisingly likable Giants. I hope to eventually write about all of these things at one point of another, whether here or somewhere else.

Let's get back on track this is a blog about baseball cards and all. This card comes from my good friend Will over at foulbunt.
Hey sweet! I was 2004 OF prospect drafted by the Rockies! I should at that to my Linkedin profile and see if anyone calls me out on it. So I was born in Salem Oregon in 1982 and attended Galena HS in Reno, Nevada.
I was originally drafted by the Os in the 21st round of the 2001 draft. I turned them down and was then drafted in the 9th round of the 2004 draft by the Colorado Rockies. I never made it to the Bigs, but did finish with a .267 batting average. That's good right?

In all seriousness this was a great card when I opened it up. It doesn't matter the playing level either. The sound of balls cracking off bats, the uninterested whines of kids, and the cat calls of the vendors is enough to distract you from any worry. While I was sitting in my seat watching batting practice it didn't even register that I'm an unemployed college grad, sure I have a part time job, but no way do I want to stay where I'm at with barely enough money to buy a six pack of Oberon. It didn't register that I no longer have to cram for an exam in order to get the passing grade so I can piss away 3 years attending law school and burying myself in even more debt. I pray that the inevitable social collapse will happen within that time period so my debt will be forgotten as the financial institutions smolder and sirens wail. Enough ranting.
I attended a Tigers game when they played the Whitesox which I mentioned in an earlier post concerning my Felix Hernandez ball. After bar hoping in Greektown we stumbled over to Comerica park well before the game started. My girlfriend bought us great seats. 5 rows back from the third base line. I hurried down to the field to catch the Tigers wrap up batting practice in the chance they would stop and talk to fans...spoiler alert they didn't. I was even the creepy guy surrounded by little kids and their dads. Dejected I walked up and spent the 18 dollars for a beer (it wasn't $18 but it was damn close). I walked back down figuring I'd watch the Whitesox take batting practice. They were a lot more interesting to watch. Konerko cracked off home run after home run over the bull pen. It was awesome to see the little kids in hte outfield scrambling over seats. Adam Dunn who made Inge look good last year followed suit. Anyway I heckled the infielders enough that Gordon Beckham threw me over a practice ball. Sure I might have spilled my beer reaching over to grab it, but it was worth it.

The Tigers came back on the field for warm up stretches. Needless to say they still didn't greet any of the fans. Cabby gave an acknowledging hat tip and a wave, and Fielder ran sprints which made it look like time was going in reverse. Out of the Tigers lineup I have to say AJax was probably the coolest giving away warm up balls to the little kids and taking pictures. Raburn was also a nice guy carrying on conversations with fans and promptly signing everything handed his way. It's funny how those are the players that are the coolest. The game was great complete with your typical Tigers at bats. I don't think I saw 18 gidps so that was good, and Peralta hit a walk off home run which was awesome to see. I'll be going back soon, but this time I'll probably stick to trying to meet Andy Dirks and Drew Smyly since the big guys typically ignore everyone.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-15788171466334830942012-05-18T18:44:00.001-07:002012-05-18T18:44:57.098-07:00JV > WeaverFor those of you not in the Detroit area Verlander just pitched a great game, and was 2 outs away from a no-hitter. It would have been his 3rd. He's certainly made my time in Michigan enjoyable. Hopefully he'll continue to dominate this season. Repeat Cy Young perhaps?
I'll blog about the actual game and what not soon since I've got something really sweet to show off. Anyway The week before I knew the Mariners were in town so I was hoping they would have some memorabilia left over from the 3 game series (which the Tigers lost I might add). I took a look at some reasonably priced gear such as batting helmets, bats, hats, etc. I glanced over at the game used balls and wasn't disappointed. They had an Ichiro foul ball which was way more than I wanted to pay, at $100. If it was a hr then maybe. Right below was a King Felix pitched ball. I had to have it. After shooting the shit with the guy I got a pretty good deal on it. It pays off to be a fan of a mediocre team! Here it is. It's hard to tell in the picture, but it's pretty scuffed up. I'm not sure if it's nail scratches or if it was a ball in dirt. Anyways it looks great up on my shelf.
It only took spending $1,000,678.34 at target before it finally happened and the pack wasn't even from there! Anyways I was going through my Christmas stocking, man it has been awhile since I've blogged, and my brother picked me up a couple Topps update packs. My first thought was man this is a large pack. As usual I figured it was a dummy card.
Sifting through Marlins, D-backs, and Gio Gonzalez I found this.

Shitty cell phone picture aside it's a pretty cool card. I know a lot of people think he's a cheat but whatever. It's a nice looking card. I would have been more happy with a JV relic or Mighy but beggars can't be choosers.
I had a decent size collection of mainly Mariners players, but I remember I had several signed balls that resided on my shelf until we moved to Korea. Since then my parents have moved back to Germany, yet my baseball goodies remained buried away in some box. Last year when I flew back home for Christmas I was on a mission to find them. Going through dusty boxes I found some of my old pennants, back from when the Mariners were good, and several from the Tacoma Rainiers. I have since lost track of where they have gone, but I did find the balls, and then forgot them.Last week when my parents came to visit my mom finally remembered to bring them so I'll begin to highlight them.

First up is my Jim "Catfish" Hunter ball which I've had several offers for. I believe I got this ball when I was 9 or 10. I'm not too sure on the story behind it. I just know my dad ran into him and he came home with this.
Catfish pitched in the majors from 1965 to 1979 for the Athletics and Yankees. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987, and is technically my first HoFer. Throughout his lengthy career he amassed a 224-166 win loss record, not too shabby. His career highlights are impressive: Cy Young in '74, 5x WS winner, 8x All-Star, and threw a perfect game! I dread this part of the season when the Tigers face the Mariners. As a Tacoma transplant living outside of Detroit I'm commonly asked which team am I going to root for? This is like asking me if I like like Black Flag with Henry Rollins or Henry Rollins by himself? It's not an easy decision. I grew up with that Mariners playing in the background to my childhood.
I witnessed the collective gasps of an entire city when Griffey slammed into the outfield wall and broke his wrist. I've seen the hopes of a city reach staggering heights when Edgar stepped up to bat in the 11th inning. I've seen Judas accept money worth more than an entire team, how's that feel Texas fans? Speaking off Judas I met him as kid when my elementary school got to tour Tacoma Rainiers ball park. A-Rod actually seemed like a nice guy, he signed something of mine which I have since lost. That's life when you're six.The team in the 90s is definitely not the team today. My childhood heroes have since retired. No more free admission for shaving your head on Jay Buhner day. No more Griffey wowing fans with his perfect swing. No more Edgar stepping to the plate in clutch situations.
That's life, the Mariners have gone through their ups and downs and I've sat back and watched the team wallow in their mediocrity for way too many seasons. Luckily there is hope for the future. Felix Hernandez, though losing velocity, is a pitcher every team pines for. I know many Mariners fans will disagree, but I believe we should trade or sell him while his value is high. Maybe we can actually get a someone that can hit, whose name doesn't begin with an I. This isn't the 2000s anymore Ichiro's abilities aren't what they use to be. A stellar pitching staff just need the offense to get them the wins.
Since moving to Michigan almost 5 years ago I fell in love with baseball culture out here. Even in 90s when the Tigers were godawful they still had fans coming out for games at old Tigers Stadium. Recent years they under performed with such a talented lineup. I know many fans want Leyland out and I don't blame them. The man puts Inge into the everyday lineup and then finds convoluted reasons as to why it had to be done. I understand Inge is the Tigers mascot he was with the team at their absolute worst and at their best. It's the nostalgia, which brings me to the point of this post. I'll always have an affinity for the Mariners, but the nostalgia of the my childhood wont make up for the years of watching awful baseball. Just like the nostalgia for Inge wont make up for his .056 batting average (or whatever it's at now) I hope the Mariners put up a fight against Tigers, but for the next 3 days I will taking off my Mariners cap and cheering for the Tigers.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-51797023242142467962012-04-16T05:25:00.000-07:002012-04-16T05:25:04.034-07:00Recent pick upIt's weird getting back into writing for fun, and on a topic not related to democratizing countries. As you know Valentine's day was only about 2 months ago, but I received an awesome gift, from my awesome girlfriend. A sports memorabilia shop finally opened up in downtown Ann Arbor. For the most part the merchandise was Michigan Wolverine related. I mean the owner had football programs dating back to the 20s. Unfortunately I'm not much of a football collector. There were baseball goodies there too, much to my surprise. Digging through antique gloves and signed pictures of Denny McClain I found this gem:

(Don't mind my hipster end table or my Tin-Tin comic book.)
Seriously though how awesome is this?! I would have never have thought I'd find an Ichiro bobble head all the way out here in Michigan. He makes a nice addition with Judas(A-Rod) next to him. I really need to start buying some shelves for my expanding collection.
Losing Griffey was tough. I grew up watching him, Edgar, and Buhner putting Seattle on baseball's radar. As a consolation prize Seattle signed some Japanese superstar. We somehow managed to replace the man with the best swing in baseball for one of the best hitters since Pete Rose. It definitely lessened the blow.
I was grateful when my girlfriend picked this up for me when had my back turned, and made Valentine's day that much better.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-32631129891167307802012-04-15T17:00:00.001-07:002012-04-15T17:16:23.281-07:00Quick update and a graduation giftHey guys I apologize for disappearing these last few months. I took a research position which ate up most of my free time, but the opportunity was too good to turn down. Classes are wrapping up and I'll soon be an alumni from one of the greatest universities in the world; the University of Michigan.

Anyway one of my good friends, William from over at Foul Bunt, wanted to get me a gift in celebration. I told him he didn't have to get me anything since he's been sending care packages of all of his Tigers and Mariners cards throughout the semester. He certainly didn't disappoint.
I couldn't believe it when I looked into the box. The Kaline ball was a great addition to my Tigers collection. He also sent me a huge stack of Johnny Damon cards which I'll highlight soon.

Thanks again Will! Let's hope we can work out a deal for Ethier too my team is taking a beating with offense.

So I'm sure many of you have read by now that Michael Pineda has gone to the Evil Empire in deal that brought a catcher that can't catch to Seattle. Jesus Montero can crush the ball at the minor league level and in a hitter friendly major league ball park. I hate to see Pineda leave after a year for the Mariners, but the Mariners' brass being the cheap asses they are swapped a young pitching prospect for a hitting prospect to win the fans over. We were never in the running for Fielder, it was all smoke and mirrors. Even if we were gonna make a push for him why would Fielder want to come play for a mediocre team that has consistently squandered talent? Our biggest goal each season is to not finish below the Athletics. Maybe hitting will pick up this year; a healthy Smoak, Ackley, and Montero could give the Mariners a line up that isn't the joke of the American League.
I guess Mariners fans can rejoice in the fact that hey at least we're not the Pirates.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-9629821842564365482011-12-19T05:54:00.000-08:002011-12-19T05:54:35.028-08:00Auf WiedersehenI'm heading back to Germany for a week to see my family. I've had a stack of cards on my desk that have needed to go out to Spankee, the Lost Collector, and ManuPatches. I didn't forget, but the end of the semester has been crazy. I hope to get the packages out when I get back so you should have them around New Years.

Happy Holidays everyone!A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-28008237546261865592011-12-04T10:01:00.000-08:002011-12-04T10:08:50.638-08:00Contest Winnings from the Cardboard HeroesI recently won a contest that potchwheeler held awhile back. Honestly I forgot that I entered into it until he made a post announcing the winners. Luckily for me I was third on the winners list. I believe the top five got to make two choices out of the cards of his choosing. Potch had some great stuff available and I quickly jumped on this beauty...

He was fortunate enough to receive a Pineda short print at the National Convention and made it available. These cards were limited and I believe mine is #ed 277/299. Pineda has become a recent player that I've been collecting so if anyone out there has something of his to trade send me an email.

My other choice was just as good as the first. I received a stack of Gypsy Queen minis in the hopes that the Daily Dimwit would need a few for his set since I lack any Astros to trade his way. I'm slowly but surely accumulating cards to set aside for a trade I hope to highlight soon. Anyway, I got off track, here are the cards.

Thanks Potch for an awesome contest I'm glad I was able to add a card to my Pineda collection that I probably wouldn't have been able to otherwise.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-82884730797349343002011-11-30T20:43:00.000-08:002011-11-30T20:43:52.181-08:00Taters gonna TateIt's a bit late, but a huge congrats goes out to the University of Michigan. My university was finally able to snap its losing streak to the Suckeyes; Hoke was able to do something that Rich Rod wasn't and I couldn't be prouder. Unfortunately, going to school so close to the Ohio border results in a lot of friends being OSU fans. I'd like to respond to all of their bitching and moaning with this....

This isn't what the post is about though, oh no. I realize that I haven't posted in ages and the stacks of cards that need to be scanned have been piling up to the point of no return. I placed a recent order with COMC and although I was shopping for friends I did manage to pick up something for myself.

BOOM! One of my major collecting goals is complete. I got a pretty sweet deal on the card after bartering with the seller. King Felix is one of my favorite players behind Johnny Damon. I was lucky enough to see him pitch a few years back, in Safeco no less. I can't wait to add another auto to go along with this one....too bad it's extremely hard to find dealers out here that collect west coast teams.

Fair warning, I'll be deviating from my Tigers related posts for some time. I've got a ton of Mariners to highlight so keep checking back soon.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-63172526375846222962011-10-30T13:29:00.000-07:002011-10-30T13:29:21.675-07:00Shh don't tell the girlfriendI have a mistress, a cardboard mistress. I'm sure most of you follow mycardboardmistress and if you don't go check it out now! Anyways Adam has opened up some great packs lately, a DiMaggio jersey relic comes to mind. There were one or two cards I would have loved to add to my personal collections and lucky for me Adam obliged. When I got home Friday I had a package waiting which was a pleasant surprise. I still owe Adam some cards for the trade so I wasn't expecting a package yet, but he was clearing out cards to make room. I anxiously opened it up and imagine my surprise when these colorful cards fell out.

He was nice enough to include some Damons I still needed, Dustin Ackley who I hope will live up to his hype as the Mariners desperately need some hope to cling to, and a #ed McCutchen! This was only the appetizer so to speak.

The UD Piece of History cards look great, especially with the red border. I glad I was able to add this to my binder as well.

Finally we get to the card that began this whole trade, but first a disclaimer. I don't really collect any Yankee cards unless it features Maris or Damon. Although Damon is only a small part of the card I felt like I could make an exception, you know since it's #18 of 25!
I hope to have some cards ordered soon now that I finally got my refund.

I believe it was even before school started. Anyways I'm trying to scan the stack of cards I have from trades and purchases; so why not start with my recent card show haul.
First up are some Topps 206 needs. I've decided I'm gonna go after this set since it should be affordable now. The Lincecum is a short print and the Tulo is a #ed mini.

Next up are some cards that I've gotten from Dennis in our ongoing massive trade. The Damon is a short print. The Smoak auto is pretty cool. I'm glad that I was able to get one before he becomes one of the Mariners next superstars....god please let this be true. The two Cabby's are nice additions as is the McCutchen manu patch.

Finally for the good stuff:

A couple vintage Norm Cash which I got off a seller for a $1.50. The '63 Maris is one of my favorite cards that I now own. I got him off a dealer for a trade. It's a little off centered and has been trimmed a bit, but I don't care.

All in all the show was a little disappointing compared to the last time we went; less tables and unfriendly dealers from the East Lansing persuasion.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-52310039123230978092011-10-10T16:55:00.000-07:002011-10-10T16:55:56.424-07:00Really?Not trying to get down on the Tigers, but how the hell did they even make it this far? I'm not trying to get down on my team or anything, but the offense looks bad, defense looks bad, and pitching has been mediocre. With that said I hope Fister pitches an awesome game Friday and the Tigers survive. If not, I can't say I'd be all that pissed. I'm just glad a Central team put up a fight and didn't get swept.....here's looking at you Twins. If the baseball season ends early there's always the Lions, which I never thought I'd say this but they look good out there. Also the hockey season begins on Friday!! Is anyone else excited?

Speaking of hockey does anyone have any Zetterberg cards available for trade? I'm looking at expanding my card collection to include hockey.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-478984599444601991.post-51070375762278575502011-10-03T17:51:00.000-07:002011-10-03T17:51:52.505-07:00Which one has been worse...at the plate so far this post season? I've dropped off the face of the blogging world. Believe me this wasn't by choice, but I unfortunately decided to study for the LSAT which will reach its conclusion tomorrow morning. This meant that it ate up all available free time that wasn't spent on work or school. So, everyone that I've got a trade pending with (Jeff, Dustin, Cardboard Mistress) after tomorrow I'll have much more free time to get some cards together to send you way.

Speaking of trades I've got quite a few to highlight, as well as what I picked up at the most recent card show. I finally got a scanner so no more iPhone pics!

Now on to the state of the Tigers. They finally made it! Like legitimately won, no wild card race for us. It's nice to see all of the huge and long contracts finally work out. Cabby leads the league in batting average and JV I'm convinced is a robot. I can't wait to see how he does tonight, but I'm more looking forward to Fister who has been amazing since he left Seattle. I don't want to bad mouth my home team or anything, but imagine if the Mariners were actually able to get more than 1 or 2 runs on the board in any given game. Fister could easily have been a 18 game winner. Instead we snagged him, and it looks like he'll make an awesome 1-2 punch next season.

Now onto the rest of the rotation. Porcello and Scherzer just aren't doing it for me this year. I want so bad to enjoy watching them, but they make me cringe every time they walk a batter. At least they're not like a high school pitching machine aka Brad Penny. Oh and incase you didn't hear he made the play off team. Why? I couldn't tell you. Maybe it's Leyland's strategy to let the opposing team score 6 runs by the 4th so we can claw our way back.

Finally, big congrats to the Rays. I'm looking forward to seeing Damon in the post season again.

As always Spiegel's package didn't disappoint. He again included some 80s Tigers that are much welcomed in my collection.
I've seen a few posts from people that have ordered their cards already and the die cuts look awesome. I was lucky enough to get a Felix Hernandez die cut which I posted about a while back ago. After seeing some ridiculous offers for it, I decided to make a trade with it. I honestly didn't think anyone would take the Hernandez for what I wanted, but this evening I checked and was surprised with this.
It will look great next to my vintage Maris cards. Now I'm trying to trade some of the other cards in my collection so I can get the King Felix back.A2 Wolverinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504877310965107248noreply@blogger.com0
